Classic French Toast is a delightful breakfast dish made with thick slices of brioche or challah bread soaked in a rich egg and milk mixture, flavored with vanilla and cinnamon. Cooked to golden perfection, it’s often served with maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh fruit, making it a favorite for brunch or a cozy morning meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 thick slices of brioche or challah bread
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 4 large eggs
  • Butter for cooking
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • Maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh fruit for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together 4 large eggs, 1 cup whole milk, 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (if using) until fully combined.
  2. Place a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Melt a tablespoon of butter and spread it evenly across the surface.
  3. Dip each slice of brioche or challah bread into the egg mixture, soaking for about 10-15 seconds on each side. Ensure the bread is coated but not overly soggy.
  4. Cook the soaked bread slices on the hot skillet or griddle for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Serve immediately with maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, and fresh fruit as desired.
