Ingredients
Scale
2 tablespoons butter
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
Salt and pepper to taste
8 slices of bread (such as sourdough or rustic bread)
2 tablespoons butter (for grilling)
2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
Instructions
Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook until soft and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes. Stir in sugar and balsamic vinegar, cooking for an additional 5 minutes until onions are deeply caramelized. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and set aside.
Preheat a griddle or skillet over medium heat. Butter one side of each bread slice.
Place 4 slices of bread on the skillet, buttered side down. Evenly distribute Gruyère cheese on top, followed by a generous layer of caramelized onions. Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up. Cook sandwiches until golden brown and cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Press gently with a spatula for even grilling.
Slice sandwiches in half and serve immediately to enjoy the gooey, savory goodness of French Onion Grilled Cheese!
