2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup granulated sugar
4 large egg yolks
2 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a donut pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined.
Transfer the batter to a piping bag and fill the donut pan about 2/3 full.
Bake for 10-12 minutes until the donuts spring back when touched. Cool slightly.
Heat milk and cream in a saucepan until steaming. In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth.
Gradually whisk the hot milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture. Return to the saucepan and cook until thickened. Stir in vanilla extract and cool slightly.
Use a piping bag to fill each donut with the custard filling.
Sprinkle a thin layer of granulated sugar over each donut and caramelize with a kitchen torch.
