Ingredients
Scale
1 cup white sugar
3 cups whole milk
3 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 (14 ounces) can sweetened condensed milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Place 1 cup sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously until the sugar melts and turns golden brown, about 10 minutes. Quickly pour the caramelized sugar into a round baking dish, tilting the dish to coat the bottom evenly.
In a separate saucepan, heat the whole milk until it starts to bubble but is not boiling.
In a mixing bowl, beat eggs, vanilla extract, sweetened condensed milk, and salt until well combined. Gradually add the hot milk while stirring continuously.
Pour the mixture into the caramel-coated baking dish.
Place the baking dish into a larger baking pan. Fill the larger pan with hot water to reach halfway up the sides of the flan dish.
Bake in the preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until set. To check for doneness, insert a knife into the center; if it comes out clean, the flan is ready.
Remove from the oven and let it cool. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan and invert onto a serving plate.
