Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3 cups cake flour
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate milk
  • ⅔ cup butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 5 ⅓ cups powdered sugar
  • 1 ⅓ cups cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • ⅔ cup chocolate milk (for frosting)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease and flour 3 round cake pans and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream butter, sugar, and vanilla. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together cake flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Alternately add the flour mixture and chocolate milk to the butter mixture, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
  5. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. In a large bowl, combine softened butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, chocolate milk, and vanilla extract using a hand mixer until smooth and creamy.
  7. Adjust the consistency of the frosting by adding more powdered sugar if it's too thin or more milk if it's too thick.
  8. Once the cakes are completely cooled, frost them with the prepared chocolate frosting.
