  • 2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups (500ml) heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup (100g) grated Gruyère cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (50g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • Fresh chives or thyme, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a baking dish generously with softened butter.
  2. In a saucepan, combine heavy cream, whole milk, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Heat over medium until simmering; remove from heat.
  3. Arrange half of sliced potatoes in the buttered baking dish, overlapping slightly.
  4. Pour half of the cream mixture over potatoes, then sprinkle with half of Gruyère cheese. Repeat with remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and top with remaining Gruyère and Parmesan cheeses.
  5. Cover dish with foil; bake for 45 minutes. Uncover; bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown and potatoes are tender.
  6. Let gratin rest briefly. Garnish with freshly chopped chives or thyme.
