Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 ounces Dr. Pepper
  • 3 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 red onion, sliced
  • 3 pounds pork shoulder

Instructions

  1. Spray a 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Pour a small amount of BBQ sauce into the base and set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the remaining BBQ sauce, Dr. Pepper, paprika, brown sugar, black pepper, and kosher salt until well combined.
  3. Place the sliced onions in the bottom of the slow cooker. Lay the pork shoulder on top of the onions.
  4. Pour the BBQ sauce mixture over the pork, ensuring it’s evenly coated.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or on high for 4 to 5 hours. For the best results, cooking on low is recommended.
  6. Once cooked, carefully remove the pork from the slow cooker. Using two forks, shred the meat, discarding any large pieces of fat.
  7. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker to soak up more of the delicious sauce, or serve immediately in sandwiches topped with extra BBQ sauce from the slow cooker.
