Ingredients
Scale
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup shortening
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons powdered milk
1 1/2 cups warm water
Extra flour for dusting
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and powdered milk.
Gradually add warm water to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms.
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead until soft but not sticky. Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes.
Divide the dough into balls about 2 inches in diameter. Flatten each ball by patting and stretching it out.
In a frying pan, heat about an inch of shortening until hot.
Carefully place the flattened dough into the hot shortening. Fry one side until golden brown, then flip and fry the other side.
Top the frybread with your choice of toppings, such as honey, powdered sugar, cooked sausage, or a fried egg.
