1 quart fresh or frozen blackberries, rinsed
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp lemon extract
1 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp nutmeg
2/3 cup milk
Instructions
In a large saucepan, combine blackberries, water, 1 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, and lemon extract. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder, 1 tbsp sugar, 1/4 tsp salt, nutmeg, and milk until combined. Drop tablespoonfuls of the dough into the simmering berry mixture.
Cover tightly and simmer for 15 minutes until the dumplings are cooked through.
Spoon the warm dumplings and berry mixture into bowls and serve hot, topped with vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream.
