This classic Patty Melt recipe features juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese, all sandwiched between slices of buttery rye bread. Perfect for a hearty meal, these melts are easy to prepare and sure to satisfy your cravings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 1 stick butter (divided)
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 5 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 whole large onion, halved and sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a medium skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and soft. Set aside.
  2. In a bowl, mix the ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Form the mixture into 4 patties.
  3. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a separate skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until fully cooked in the middle. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Place a slice of rye bread on a clean surface. Layer with one slice of Swiss cheese, a beef patty, a quarter of the caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and top with a second slice of rye bread.
  5. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a griddle or skillet over medium heat. Grill the sandwiches until golden brown on one side, then flip and add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the skillet. Cook until the second side is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  6. Slice each sandwich in half and serve immediately.
