Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a mix)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the all-purpose flour to the melted butter. Whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes until it forms a roux.
  3. Gradually pour in the whole milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
  4. Cook the mixture, stirring continuously, until it starts to thicken, about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and add the shredded cheese to the sauce a little at a time, stirring until the cheese melts and the sauce becomes smooth and creamy.
  6. If desired, add the garlic powder for extra flavor. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  7. Once the cheese has melted completely and the sauce has reached your desired consistency, remove it from the heat. Serve immediately.
