Beef Shawarma is a flavorful Middle Eastern dish featuring marinated beef slices cooked to perfection and served in warm flatbreads. The combination of spices, caramelized onions, and optional fresh salad ingredients creates a satisfying meal that is both rich in taste and texture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g beef steak (such as sirloin or flank), thinly sliced
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp plain yogurt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground paprika
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, adjust to taste)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Flatbreads or pita breads, to serve
  • Salad ingredients (e.g., lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, red onion), optional
  • Tahini sauce, yogurt sauce, or hummus, optional

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine olive oil, minced garlic, lemon juice, plain yogurt, ground cumin, paprika, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper. Add sliced beef, toss to coat, cover, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  2. Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook marinated beef slices in batches for 3-4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add more olive oil if needed. Cook thinly sliced onions over medium heat until caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Warm flatbreads or pita breads. Place cooked beef slices and caramelized onions in the center of each. Add optional salad ingredients.
  5. Drizzle with tahini sauce, yogurt sauce, or hummus if desired. Roll up flatbreads or fold pitas over the filling. Serve immediately while warm.
