Ingredients
Scale
2 large onions, halved and sliced
1 tbsp vegetable oil
2 tsp American-style mustard, plus extra to serve
4 large frankfurters
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
4 hot dog buns, split
2 tbsp honey
2 tsp cider or white wine vinegar
2 tsp ketchup, plus extra to serve
2 tsp tomato purée
¼ tsp ground cinnamon
Large pinch of chili powder
Sauerkraut, to serve
Instructions
Heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the halved and sliced onions and cook for 10-12 minutes until softened and lightly browned.
Stir in the ground cinnamon and chili powder, cooking for an additional minute.
Add the honey, American-style mustard, ketchup, tomato purée, cider or white wine vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce to the pan. Stir well to combine and cook for 5-7 minutes until the sauce has thickened and the onions are well coated. Remove from heat and set aside.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Add the frankfurters and cook for 5-7 minutes until heated through.
Place a cooked frankfurter into each hot dog bun. Top with a generous portion of the street-cart onions. Add sauerkraut and extra mustard and ketchup if desired.
Serve the hot dogs immediately, accompanied by any remaining street-cart onions.
