  • 7 large Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored, and sliced)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Zest of half a lemon
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • Sanding sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix sliced apples with sugars, flour, spices, lemon juice, and zest.
  3. Roll out the first pie crust and fit into a deep dish pie plate.
  4. Add the apple filling.
  5. Roll out the second pie crust; cover the filling and seal edges.
  6. Cut slits into the top crust for steam venting.
  7. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with sanding sugar if desired.
  8. Bake for 25 minutes at 400°F; reduce heat to 375°F and bake for an additional 30–35 minutes until golden.
